2023 Textron Systems Meeting
SAMPE Boston is Back!
The newly appointed leadership team of the SAMPE Boston Chapter was pleased to host their first official event, post-pandemic. The meeting and presentation were held at The Establishment Restaurant in Chelmsford, MA. There were 50 in-person, plus 10 remote attendees. In addition to a variety of professional members from private industry and government, we were pleased to host student & faculty representatives from the University of Massachusetts Lowell (Davide Masato, Patrick Drane), the University of Southern Maine and Northeastern University (Randall Erb).
Our chapter chairman, Konstantine (Kosta) Fetfatsidis, kicked off the meeting with a short presentation, "Igniting the Future of Material and Process Engineering", including a short update on SAMPE and its relevance in today's engineering world, along with the status of the Boston Chapter and our initial plans and near-term goals. He also included a call to action for our local members to help provide us with some input & guidance!
Konstantine then introduced Wesley Chapkin, PhD, from Textron, who presented “The Evolution of Ablative Materials for Reentry and Hypersonic Applications”. The presentation provided an excellent history and the background science on high temperature resistant materials, along with the needs for new temperature resistant materials for reentry and hypersonic applications. The presentation was very well received with a lively Q&A afterwards.
Keep on the lookout for more meetings, events, and plant tours as we develop our schedule/plans for 2024. We have a very large geographic footprint, from the Canadian border to southern New England, and from eastern Maine to upstate New York, so if you are interested in hosting an event or plant to our in your local area, don't be shy and let us know. We are looking to become more mobile and support our local members, no matter how far away from Boston!
SAMPE can always use more volunteers, so please feel free to raise your hand if you are interested. If you like the trade shows, technical papers/support, and the networking & mentorship opportunities that SAMPE provides, please do not hesitate to join. A strong society is a key contributor to a strong industry. SAMPE is a volunteer organization and it's through the contributions of its many and diverse members that provide benefit and value for all members, for the professional and personal advancement of materials and processes engineers.
Thank you for your support. We will be looking forward to seeing you all again at the next event/meeting. Until then Happy Holidays!
